Biblical Authority – Values Part 5

By Mike Henry Sr.

We believe the Bible is the inspired word of God. We believe God is powerful enough to get his point across. Biblical authority is described within the Scripture –

All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work. 1 Timothy 3:16-17 NASB

In John chapter 1, the term “Word of God” is explained to be Jesus. He was called the Logos, which is the Greek word translated Word. Jesus and the Bible are one. Therefore, if we understand some difference between the Bible and Jesus, we’re mistaken.

Our core belief is that Jesus is God. He is the One we follow. And God’s Word is the Bible. There is no separation between the 3. In 2 Peter, the apostle Peter even said the scripture was more sure than even his own eyewitness experiences. The Bible is reliable and it therefore serves as our authority.

We talked about how God calls us each to individually walk with him and follow him. We express our faith creatively living a life that can’t be explained apart from Jesus being God of the universe and being actively involved with us personally. Sometimes our life looks like everyone else’s life. We obey the laws, submit to authority, and give our lives in service to others. Sometimes, our life looks different. But our creativity, and innovation, our actions and our choices must line up with the Bible.

Scripture serves as our judge. Hebrews 4:12 says the Bible is living and active and sharper than the sharpest sword. It is able to cut through the non-sense and get to the truth of a matter. The Bible serves as our guide for each and every decision. We can know God will never prompt us to act contrary to the Scripture. Therefore, he won’t change his Bible either.

We are free to make our own choices. A Follower of One wants to follow Jesus on Jesus’ terms, and we can find those terms in the Bible. We choose to line ourselves up with the authority of scripture and use the Bible to guide how we live our life and make our choices.

Biblical Authority is the 4th of our core values. Check out the list here and read about the other values, too.
