Common Mission – Values Part 6

By Mike Henry Sr.

We share a common mission, but we unite at the foot of the cross. Every place else, we’re different.

There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all. Ephesians 4:4-6.

Paul, the apostle writes that we are to show patience and tolerance for one another (Ephesians 4:2) reminding us that we follow the same God. God is our common denominator. We all strive to live according to the commands, direction and instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ. He is in charge. He directs us. But he seldom tells us all to do the same thing.

Our common mission is to live a life that makes Jesus visible. Each of us is asked to do that in different ways. We see the variety in worship styles and in the ways we apply Biblical teaching to our lives. We each decided to follow Jesus a different way and we each daily follow him differently.

But through the variety, Jesus is the object of our faith. He is the One we follow. He gives us the Holy Spirit to keep us connected and growing. And God even uses our shortcomings and our mistakes. He uses every aspect of our lives to make himself known.

I can’t explain the Trinity fully as I don’t understand it fully. But I recognize the authority of the Bible and it says that God the Father, Jesus the Son and the Holy Spirit are One. They are working to restore the relationship we broke when we each first lived as if God didn’t exist. When we decide to follow Jesus, we begin to live part of our life as if God does exist. And as we live following Jesus, we see him and so do the people around us.

A Jesus-follower knows Jesus is the answer to every problem. But even Jesus left us free to make our own choices. So rather than try to coerce others to believe in Jesus, we want to live our lives as followers of his, so others will discover life as a Jesus follower too.

We value following Jesus.
