Create a Work-Life Shaped by Christ

By Mike Henry Sr.

What does a life shaped by Christ look like?

We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ, 2 Corinthians 10:5 NASB

We use our powerful God-tools for smashing warped philosophies, tearing down barriers erected against the truth of God, fitting every loose thought and emotion and impulse into the structure of life shaped by Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:5 The Message

Wikipedia calls The Message Bible, an idiomatic translation but I always heard it called a paraphrase. I like to compare the Message version of familiar passages to other translations, like the New American Standard and the English Standard versions, the two I most often use.

What does obeying Jesus look like in our workplaces?

By comparing these translations, we notice the author of The Message refer to “the structure of life shaped by Christ” as a description of how we obey Jesus. What but does obeying Jesus look like in our workplaces? Christ’s parting command instructed us to make disciples (Matthew 28:18-20). He did add in Acts 1:8, more like a statement of fact, that we would be witnesses.

Today, your life is on display. To earn a living most of us work for someone else. Either for a boss or for customers, taxpayers, voters or family members. Stay-at-home moms and retired grand parents work for their family. How can you meet or exceed expectations and make disciples?

Christ served others. He came in the form of a baby, submitted himself, lived, suffered and died to make a way for us to experience a restored relationship with Himself, our Creator. When I ask Jesus to shape my life, I will serve others. I will live in such a way that my life can’t be explained apart from Jesus. And when I live that kind of live, I don’t need to memorize a gospel presentation. I freely explain in a reasonable way why I believe what I believe (1 Peter 3:15).

Today, ask God how he wants you to structure your work-life. Then do it. When God gives you an idea, take action. He won’t tell you to be selfish or do a poor job. He will give you the power and the ability to serve others. Don’t let the ideas God gives you get stale. Act now to restructure your work-life so Jesus is visible.
