Live with Purpose

By Mike Henry Sr.

Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive. Howard Thurman

I owe, I owe, so off to work I go. Various – poem, country song, bumper sticker.

Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. Romans 13:8

What takes you to work each day? What drives you as you spend your life? What will you, or your family have when it’s over?

If you’re like me, when I first started following Jesus, and for years afterward, I had trouble living on what I made. It seemed like we went from unexpected problem to unexpected problem. My main purpose was either reacting to a problem or chasing my own desires. We couldn’t stretch our wins out long enough to overcome the surprises or our own desires and commitments. Many of us have grown up in a world where we grew comfortable with consumption.

Your Best You

But I’m not sure this verse is as much about money as some would think. Paul isn’t talking about our wealth, he’s talking about our commitments and our responsibility as good citizens. Have you ever questioned who you are when you’re at your best? My best me is someone who if free to share, free to serve, able to help. My best me is someone who is thinking of others first. When I’m someone who gives active love and serves people, I’m at my best. I can serve others close by or far away. Sometimes we need to go far away, but, I can practice and sharpen my skills by loving and serving the people who are nearby.

Move Toward Purpose

So where are you going through the motions? What can you do to stop the merry-go-round and be available to love and serve someone today. When was the last time you asked God to direct your behavior and not just buying or doing what popped into your head? Ask God to show you the purpose he intended. He will show you what he made you to do (Ephesians 2:10). And then go do it. It will make you come alive!

Did you listen for God? Did he give you any ideas? They’re not an accident. Share them below or join the community and share your thoughts there. Write down what you think and start moving that direction. God will direct you to places where you can live more of your life, free to serve.
