Marketplace Mission Trip FAQ Part 1

By Mike Henry Sr.

We’re doing another Marketplace Mission Trip this February 18 – March 1, 2019. Many people still wonder, what does a marketplace missionary do?

We did our first back in October 2018. It was more like a pilot with just a few people who actively participated. And still, almost everyone who took part experienced significant spiritual conversations with people in their own workplace. Check out the sign-up page for some testimonials and more info.

Many people have asked questions mostly because the idea of a marketplace missionary is rather foreign. So I plan to answer them. Feel free to add more questions below or in the community.

What’s Involved In A Marketplace Mission Trip?

What’s involved in this “trip”? You will receive an email and be prayed for each day. The emails will take a couple of minutes to read. The first week, they will mostly be about things we need to consider. For example, we talk about whether or not people really want to talk about spiritual things. Also, what do you do with friends who you know (or think) they’re already Christians? Another is, what are some practices that turn others off?

There’s a resource you might also read, called God Space: Where Spiritual Conversations Happen Naturally by Doug Pollock. It doesn’t take long to read, but it isn’t essential to take part in the trip.

The second week is the actual “trip.” Each morning’s email will contain practical ideas for how to pray for people and how to do your job so that Jesus will be glorified. And also on this second week, each evening at 9:30 PM Eastern, 8:30 PM Central time, we will have a conference call to pray for one another and ask questions or share praises about the things we’ve experienced. The dial-in number will be in the daily emails.

Can You Do This?

Isn’t it illegal or improper to approach people about your faith when you should be working? Yes, it is at least improper. We don’t ask you to approach people about your faith. Our process is to simply try to serve other people because we follow Jesus. For one week, pray for your coworkers, customers and anyone you plan to meet. Do you stop at Starbucks or McDonalds on your way to work? Pray for the person who will serve you. Maybe pay the bill for the person in the car behind you. Find some way to do something for someone just because you follow Jesus. In most parts of the world, actions like that are neither illegal nor improper.

Stay tuned for Part 2 where we answer more questions. And feel free to ask any questions you have below or in the community. And don’t forget to sign up!
