Workin’ for a livin’, livin’ and workin’
I’m taking what they giving ’cause I’m working for a livin’. Huey Lewis and the News
Why do you work?
When we become a workplace minister or missionary, we choose a new purpose. We’re no longer working for a living, working for the man, or working to make ends meet. We have a new purpose, finding and doing the will of God right where we are.
The most spiritual activity you do is to choose. Erwin McManus
Erwin McManus said the most spiritual thing we do is choose. I asked God to put me in ministry when I first became a believer. I didn’t like where I worked or the work that I did. I wanted work that had a noble purpose. Don’t you? I wanted my work to mean something. Don’t you? I wanted my time and energy to matter both on earth and forever. I didn’t want to go into politics; I was in the trucking business. But I wanted my work and my life to matter.
God presented me with a choice. Every time I asked him to put me into ministry, he seemed to say, “OK, you’re a minister. Go minister!” I could choose to be a minister right where I was.
Our New Purpose
You may have heard that when something is “holy” it is set apart for special duty. We become part of a holy nation (1 Peter 2:9) when we trust Jesus and bend our lives to follow him. God makes us holy, and we’re also told repeatedly to be holy (1 Peter 1:15-16). God has a purpose for us, a job, but one that doesn’t come to us naturally. We have to train ourselves to work for him. In my job, I began to choose daily to make my purpose serving the people I work with in order to make Jesus known.
Don’t just put a bible on your desk or bible verses as your screen saver. Ask God to give you creative ways to bless the people you work with. You have a new direction and a new purpose. You have a new purpose and reason for work.
