What Do You Treasure?

By Mike Henry Sr.

What do you treasure? What do you value most? I see where my time, my attention, and my money go and often, I’m not proud. Do we spend too much time watching TV? How much time do we spend surfing the Internet? Do I spend my time on anything that will outlast me? What will outlast me?

Jesus was talking to a large crowd and one of the points he made was about what we value.

Don’t collect for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But collect for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves don’t break in and steal for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:19-21 (HCSB)

What treasures are you collecting? Are you collecting money, cars, Twitter followers, blog readers, experiences, travel destinations?

Nothing from this universe will last forever except for people. Jesus said the Great Commandment was that we should love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength and love our neighbors as ourselves (Mark 12:30). The investments we make in people last forever. When we treasure others, and work for their highest, best, we invest in eternity. We lay up treasure in heaven.

“Give and it will be given to you. They will pour into your lap a good measure – pressed down, shaken together, and running over. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you.” Luke 6:38 (NASB)

Many today use this verse as some type of wealth, prosperity, vending-machine gospel. We will be rewarded. But our life is merely the first moments of eternity. I hope to treasure people, and do for them. Sure, I have failed in the past. And I’ll probably disappoint people in the future, too. But my goal is to make my investments in people. I want my treasure where it will last the longest.

Maxey Jarman, CEO of Genesco and several other businesses once hit some difficult financial times. Before and even during those leaner days, he had given away millions to support various causes. Fred Smith once asked him, if he ever wondered about the millions he gave away. He said, “Of course I have, but remember, I didn’t lose a penny of what I gave away. I only lost what I kept.”

How are your investments? What can you do tomorrow to invest in an eternal treasure?
