What Do You Believe About Jesus?

By Mike Henry Sr.

What do you believe about Jesus? Why?

The key to our ability to talk with others about Jesus lies in our ability to clearly explain the answers to these questions. Have you considered the answer to those questions? Can you offer more than the Sunday-school answer?

Jesus wants to be known. He has a purpose for each of us, and a daily difference he would like each of us to make. As we established in an earlier post, if he just saved us for a relationship with him, then why not take us to heaven when he saved us? He died on the cross so we could live to him and for him.

So, you’re here to make a difference. I don’t know what your difference is. But based on the Bible, I can guess some of it. Some of it is to join Jesus as he makes himself known. In Acts 1:8, one of the last things he said before he left for heaven was,

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Acts 1:8 NIV

Statement of Fact

Many people consider this a command, but I think it is a statement of fact. I first got that idea from Mark Early on BreakPoint in 2003. People see us living our faith and want to know more about God’s kingdom. That’s been God’s model from the beginning. Unfortunately, often others aren’t drawn to Jesus at all by our actions. Often we don’t live up to Jesus instruction for our lives. But when we demonstrate transparency and a genuine desire to humbly draw near to Jesus and make a positive difference, they may ask why we believe what we believe.

Can you answer the question in a way that makes sense to someone who doesn’t know Jesus? I hope they would at least leave the conversation knowing that you had thought carefully about the subject. Faith in Jesus is not common sense. It is opposite of what makes sense to us. But when I talk with someone else about my beliefs, I hope they know I’ve thought about it. I hope they understand I didn’t just follow Jesus to stop thinking. I followed Jesus because his teaching lines up with what I see in myself and the world.

So, can you answer the question? Share your thoughts or your answers below or in the Follower of One Community. We’re sharpening our lives to make a daily difference wherever we are.
