Called as a Servant – 2 Corinthians 6:4-9

By Tammy Burke

What can we expect once we choose to become a servant of God?

Check this list! It’s pretty difficult. I believe Paul is helping the Corinthians brace for the life of a servant of Jesus. There are good and bad things in this list. Have you memorized this list? This isn’t like the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23).

Serving God can happen in any job, any situation at any time. Notice how Paul moves through this list. We start with negative things like afflictions, hardships, distresses, beatings, etc. Then in verse 6, we move to purity, knowledge, patience, kindness. And in verse 8 we drift back to the negative again. But toward the end, he lists negative things, but also how we move through them.

Paul understands our jobs are to be examples. Even when we’re regarded as deceivers, we can yet be true. We can be considered unknown still be well known. We live in a broken world that misinterprets us. We don’t experience the normal consequences of the way the world perceives us. God has called us to be in the world, but the outcomes of our situation are different than what happens to others who do not follow Jesus.

Where is Jesus calling you to show up as his servant?
