How to Determine the End of a Season at a Job

By Tacoi Bell

God is always speaking. Sometimes he talks to us with an audible voice that we can hear. At other times, the circumstances God allows us to find ourselves in will speak louder and with focus.

When we think about the marketplace, it’s important that we always remember that we’re on assignment. We hold our positions in companies amongst peers, colleagues, and superiors because God has given us the opportunity to shift that particular atmosphere while bringing those that don’t know Christ into relationship with him. Assignments like this can last anywhere between a few moments to an entire lifetime. It is our responsibility to spend time in prayer to discern the close of one chapter and the beginning of another.

Perhaps we’ve been spending time in prayer but we’re still unsure if it’s time for us to soar to new heights. Here are some ways to determine if the season at a job is ending:

A man faces the camera. He hold his glasses in his right hand uses his left hand to pinch his eyes in frustration.

You’re No Longer Growing

As Marketplace Ministers, we give a lot of ourselves to our job and those we come in contact with. It’s not improbable to expect that as we help others grow both professionally and spiritually that we experience the same. If we are no longer experiencing growth at our place of employment, it may be time to move on to the next assignment.

You Experience Difficulties Out of Nowhere

Work has been going well. We get along with our work friends. We find ourselves as the go-to employee when there are additional tasks to be completed.

Unexpectedly, things change. We begin to hear the murmurs of coworkers behind our back. Our boss now finds fault with everything we do.

Now this doesn’t always mean a job shift. At times, God may cause us to experience a season of “persecution” and rejection in an effort to show us that he is all we need. But, if we’ve consulted with the Holy Spirit and know that God does not desire to set our face as flint (Isaiah 50:7) at this point in our life, the signs may point to the end of this season. Discernment and relying on the Holy Spirit is key.

You’re No Longer Effective in Showing Christ to Others

This is probably the biggest clue of all. If you are no longer effective in showing Christ to others, this may mean your assignment at this workplace is over.

What do we mean by effectiveness to show Christ to others?

We can determine this by taking an inventory of the following:

  • Our ability to still show the fruits of the Spirit
  • If we still feel peace
  • If the environment is leading us to sin

It is never God’s desire that we be subject to atmospheres that affect our ability to reflect his glory. When we find ourselves in that sort of situation, we can ask the Holy Spirit where he would like us to go next.

The end of a season means that God is pleased with how we devoted ourselves to fulfilling our duty to share the message of Jesus with the unsaved. With joy, pack your bags for the next adventure.
