Our Desires Limit Us – 2 Corinthians 6:12

By Tammy Burke

What do you desire? How do your desires create limits?

“We have spoken freely to you, Corinthians; our heart is wide open. You are not restricted by us, but you are restricted in your own affections.” The word translated affections comes from a reference to the stomach or gut.

Paul may be speaking about how the Corinthians were drawn to others more than Paul. He was, after all giving them some difficult news. We’re called to be servants and to do so in hardship. We may want to hear from someone else.

When we pursue the grace of God for ourselves, we become fond of it. It may be money, or honor, rewards, ease. The grace of God is given to us to give away. When we hang on to it, we receive it “in vain,” as it says in verse 1. Our job is to give away the grace we’ve received.

I have talked about the warehouse. When I ran a public warehouse, everything there didn’t belong to me. I simply took care of it for the owner. My job was to keep it from losing it’s value and then get it where the owner said to put it. when someone purchased some of we our job was to ship it. We couldn’t decide we wanted to hang on to it. It wasn’t ours.

As believers, we’re given the grace of God for his purposes, not ours. Our job is to ship it where he tells us to. He may tell you today to give someone a gift. Maybe you need to give away some money. If you’re honest with yourself, you didn’t create you, God did. Therefore everything you “earn” and everything you do comes from God. If you purchase a car that you love with your money, then you may hesitate when God asks you to give it away. Or when he asks you to use it to help someone else. Your affections restrict your ability to ship God’s grace into the world.
