“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be My witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and as far as the remotest part of the earth” — Acts 1:8
Wherever Jesus sends us, we have an opportunity to be His witnesses.
In Acts 1:7–8, Jesus reminds His disciples that the times and seasons are under the Father’s authority. They don’t need to know when everything will happen or understand everything God is doing. Instead, Jesus points them toward what they can do: receive the power of the Holy Spirit and be His witnesses.
That same principle applies to us today.
We don’t have to control what we can’t control. We can concentrate on what we can do—and we can be faithful in the sphere where God has placed us.
Be a Witness Where You Are
Jesus told His disciples they would be His witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.
For us, that mission can begin much closer to home.
Our sphere may be our workplace, our neighborhood, our family, a meeting, a phone call, or even a brief interaction with someone we encounter during the day.
We don’t have to wait for a special opportunity.
We can simply be present where we are and share what Jesus has done in our lives.
A witness testifies to what they have seen. As followers of Jesus, we have a story to tell—the story of how He has transformed us and continues to work in our lives.
We’ve Never Met an Ordinary Person
Every person we encounter matters to God.
The coworker sitting across from us.
The customer we serve.
The vendor we call.
The person who frustrates us.
The stranger standing beside us in line.
Each interaction is an opportunity to represent Jesus.
We don’t have to wonder whether a particular conversation is “spiritual enough.” Every person we meet is someone created by God and someone Jesus died for.
That changes the way we see our everyday interactions.
Instead of viewing meetings and appointments simply as items on our schedule, we can see them as opportunities to glorify Christ.
What Can You Do Today?
It’s easy to become distracted by things we cannot control.
We may want to know what God is going to do next, when He will answer a prayer, or how a situation will turn out. But those things are in God’s hands.
Our focus can be much simpler:
What does Jesus want me to do today?
We can pray for wisdom.
We can listen.
We can serve.
We can encourage.
We can share our story.
We can choose the most godly response.
We don’t have to do everything. We simply need to do what Jesus has placed in front of us.
Your Workplace Is Part of Your Sphere
Being a Marketplace Minister means recognizing that following Jesus doesn’t stop when we walk into work.
Our work is part of our mission field.
Every meeting, conversation, project, and relationship gives us another opportunity to demonstrate what life following Jesus looks like.
Sometimes being a witness means mentioning Jesus when the opportunity naturally comes up.
Sometimes it means listening to someone who needs to be heard.
Sometimes it means responding with patience when we would rather react.
Sometimes it means praying for someone or serving them in a practical way.
The goal is not to force a spiritual conversation into every interaction. The goal is to follow Jesus faithfully in every interaction.
Pursue the Most Godly Response
One way to practice this is to ask:
“What is the most godly response I can make right now?”
When something unexpected happens, we can pause instead of immediately reacting.
We can turn to Jesus for guidance and ask what He would have us do.
Our abilities may be limited, but Jesus’ abilities are not. We don’t have to solve everything. We can simply be faithful with what He has given us to do.
That is part of what it means to be His witness.
God Is Already at Work
We don’t have to create divine appointments.
Every interaction we have is already an opportunity to join God in what He is doing.
Jesus knows every person we meet. He knows their story, their circumstances, and what they need. He is already at work.
Our role is to cooperate with Him.
That means being awake and aware of the people around us and looking for opportunities to respond in a way that reflects Christ.
We’ve never met an ordinary person.
Testify in Your Sphere
Acts 1:8 reminds us that Jesus sends His people wherever He chooses.
We may not know everything He is doing, but we know what He has asked us to do: be His witnesses.
So start where you are.
Be a witness in your workplace.
Be a witness in your conversations.
Be a witness in your relationships.
Be a witness in the ordinary moments of your day.
Ask Jesus, “What do You want me to do next?”
Then do what you can.
Because what we do because we follow Jesus matters forever.
We are His witnesses, and our sphere is wherever Jesus has placed us today.
