The Heart Behind Mission Outreach

The church I currently attend has an evangelism team. They go out into the neighborhood at least once a quarter and offer to pray for soon-to-be-friends, believers and nonbelievers alike.

A few weeks ago, one of the evangelists on the evangelism team shared a word of encouragement about the importance of doing missions — being available to show those that don’t yet know Jesus that he is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6). During her time of speaking, she shared a beautiful testimony concerning what I believe is the heart behind missions.

This particular story touched me because it reflected the heart of what Follower of One is all about — being on mission at work. Sister Tracy*, our evangelism team member, shared that she works in the medical field with research doctors that hardly have interactions with patients. However, one patient connected with the office to speak with one of the doctors. The doctor was not available at the initial point of connection, and throughout the course of the day, this patient placed two additional calls to the office. This patient was persistent, much like the widow who visited the wicked judge in Luke 18.

After the last call, Tracy decided to do all she could to ensure the patient’s satisfaction with the outcome of the situation. This patient just wanted to speak to the doctor, so Tracy checked the doctor’s schedule to see when he might stop by the office to call the patient back. However, before Tracy could call the patient back to let her know when the doctor would be in office, the doctor showed up and immediately placed a call to the patient. Tracy followed up with the patient after the doctor and one thing led to another. The next thing Tracy knew, she found a new sister in faith and prayer partner.

Going the Extra Mile

Missions is about going the extra mile to ensure that people find their way to the Father. In the case of Tracy, she saw firsthand this patient’s determination to have their needs met, and Tracy did what she could to partner with the patient. The end result was something I’m sure she was not expecting.

For us, we must be willing to be inconvenienced for a little while if it means that Jesus’s love will be known and felt. Yes, we can extend kind words and prayers to those we interact with on a regular basis, but sometimes being in step with God means going out of our way to show the love of God in a tangible way. We may be the first or only connection some people have to God. In the same way that God went out of his way to sacrifice his Son for us, we can also choose to stay late and help a coworker on an important task or do everything within our power to reach a confident resolution for a stranger.

God has given his true children his heart so that we might bring others into his kingdom. And that is the true heart behind mission outreach.
