When Faith Moves Beyond Words: Living James 1:25 in a Doer’s Life

By Heather Shaffer

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the gap between what we say we believe and what we actually live out. You know the kind of faith I mean—the faith that sits in our hearts, makes us nod in agreement on Sundays, and yet rarely leaves us changed in the week ahead. James 1:25 puts it plainly: “But the one who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.”

There it is. Clear. Simple. And yet, it challenges us to examine if we’re more talk than action. Because here’s the truth: faith without works is like a car without gas—it looks ready, shiny even, but it won’t take you anywhere.

I’ve spent a lot of my life around people who talk about prayer, generosity, service, and love. They speak with conviction. Their words feel good. And don’t get me wrong—words have power. They can comfort, inspire, and ignite. But words alone? They don’t transform lives. Only action does. Only doing.

Here’s what James is nudging us toward: stop just listening to God’s Word or reading it in your quiet time. Start doing it. Start living it. The verse isn’t about perfection—it’s about movement. Are you stepping out in obedience, even when it feels inconvenient, uncomfortable, or uncertain?

I’ll be honest: sometimes it’s easier to pray and hope for change than to be the change. Sometimes it’s easier to comment on a social media post, share a verse, or tell a friend about a ministry we admire than to get off the couch and actually serve. But faith that moves only your mouth? It won’t move the world—or even your own life—in the ways God intends.

Think about it this way: God doesn’t need your words. He already knows what’s in your heart. What He desires is your hands, your feet, your willingness to step into His plan. Your words are your witness, but your actions are your testimony. When you look intently into His Word and act on it, that’s when blessing begins to flow—not just in your life, but in the lives of others around you.

So, what does doing look like in everyday life? It could be as simple as noticing a neighbor who’s struggling and offering help. Or stepping into a ministry that’s been waiting for someone like you to say yes. Or even showing up for a friend, not just sending encouraging texts. These aren’t grand gestures. They’re faithful steps that honor God. And when you keep at them, even small ones, you begin to see transformation—not just around you, but inside you.

Here’s the kicker: when your actions align with your faith, you start to experience freedom. James talks about the “perfect law that gives freedom.” That freedom isn’t in having no rules. It’s in knowing you are living a life that counts. A life that reflects what you believe. A life that actually makes a difference. And here’s where the real blessing kicks in: the more you do, the more your faith grows. Action feeds belief, and belief fuels action. It’s a cycle that builds momentum toward a life of impact.

I don’t know where you are in your journey. Maybe you feel stuck. Maybe you’ve been trying to pray and hope for change but haven’t taken the next step. Or maybe you’re already serving, but you wonder if it’s enough. Here’s my encouragement: don’t wait. Don’t wait for perfect conditions, for the right time, or for someone else to lead the way. Step up, start where you are, and trust God to guide your steps.

Faith is meant to move. Your words are meant to be backed up with your actions. When you combine prayer with practice, belief with doing, and intention with initiative, your life begins to reflect the blessing James talks about. And it all starts with one question: Am I willing to act on what I believe?

If you’re ready to take that next step and live out a faith that does more than speak, I want to invite you to a community that walks this journey with you. Follower of One is a space where believers come together to not just talk about faith, but to live it, serve together, and encourage one another. You can join the movement at followerofone.org.

Remember: actions speak louder than words. Look into the Word. Live it. Move your faith into motion. And watch God bless what you do.
