Remembering Sacrifice – 1 Corinthians 11:24-25

By Tammy Burke

“For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 1 Corinthians 11:23-25 NASB

Today is a day we commemorate the members of our armed forces who died serving our country. I think many nations have a way of recognizing those who gave an ultimate sacrifice.

But my appreciation isn’t for just the US. Whatever you think about the US, we have many freedoms that we wouldn’t have if we lived in a different time or a different nation. Some of the people hearing this podcast may not even be able to publicly follow Jesus without fear of some kind of persecution. I thank God for everyone who died fighting against injustice and in defense of freedom.

So, please enjoy this holiday in the US. And let’s not take our freedom for granted. Jesus gave his life so we could be free to show the world what following Jesus looks like. Many wonderful people died to keep that freedom for us here in the US and in other countries, too. Every day with our lives, we can say thanks. Let’s not use our freedom for our own flesh as we’re told in Galatians 5:13. Rather because we’re free, let’s serve one another through love.
