Speaking for Yourself in Faith at Work

By Heather Shaffer

Scripture: “Do not quench the Spirit. Do not treat prophecies with contempt but test them all; hold on to what is good.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:19-21

In the fast pace of the workplace, it’s easy to let your voice be overshadowed by meetings, deadlines, or hierarchy. Yet God calls each of us to speak with faith, to express gratitude and encouragement—not just for others, but through us as individuals reflecting His Spirit.

When you speak words of appreciation or encouragement, you are doing more than being polite; you are releasing the faith within you. Faith-filled words affirm God’s goodness in your environment and create a ripple of positivity for your colleagues.

For women in the workplace, this can feel intimidating. Perhaps your voice has been minimized, or your contributions overlooked. Remember, speaking in faith isn’t about asserting yourself for ego—it’s about being a vessel of God’s encouragement, expressing truth, and celebrating others while holding firm to what you believe.

Reflection:

  • How can you speak words of appreciation to a colleague today that reflect your faith in God’s goodness?
  • Are your words encouraging, uplifting, and grounded in what you truly believe?

Call to Action:
Take a moment today to write a note, send a message, or verbally express thanks to someone at work. Speak your appreciation with faith—acknowledging the positive impact God has placed in their role and your life.

Closing Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for placing me in this workplace and surrounding me with colleagues and mentors. Help me to speak words of encouragement and appreciation that reflect my faith in You. Let my voice bring light and affirmation to others, and may every word I speak honor You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
