Start With Grace: Becoming Distributors of God’s Grace in the Marketplace

What if our calling as followers of Jesus in the workplace is simpler than we think?

We often measure our impact by the conversations we have, the people we lead to Jesus, or the opportunities we have to talk openly about our faith. But what if ministry in the marketplace also looks like something much more ordinary—showing compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, and love to the people God has placed around us?

At Follower of One, we believe God is waking more and more people up to the calling to be difference-makers wherever they work. And one way we can begin is simple:

Start with grace.

We Are Called to Distribute Grace

I like to picture each of us as a warehouse for God’s grace.

God gives us His grace, and He doesn’t intend for us to store it up. He wants us to distribute it.

Think about the story of Jesus feeding the five thousand. The disciples saw a problem: there were thousands of people and not enough food. But Jesus told them to give the people something to eat.

They had to begin walking as if they had what they needed.

That same challenge applies to us.

We can easily worry about whether we have enough time, money, energy, patience, or resources. But God reminds us that He is in control. He provides what we need so that we can give what He has already placed in our hands.

The question isn’t, “Do I have enough?”

The question is, “What has God given me that I can give away today?”

Put On Your Uniform

Colossians 3:12 gives us a picture of what our lives should look like as followers of Jesus:

“Put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.”

These aren’t just good character traits. They are part of our uniform.

When we go into our workplaces, homes, neighborhoods, and communities, we have an opportunity to “put on” these qualities and represent Jesus through the way we treat people.

Compassion

Compassion means caring about the people around us.

Who needs to know today that they are seen, valued, and cared for?

Kindness

Kindness can be incredibly simple. It may be a thoughtful word, an encouraging message, or taking a few extra minutes to listen.

Small acts of kindness can create opportunities for something much bigger.

Humility

Humility reminds us that we don’t have to be the center.

It is easy to look at the world from our own perspective and put ourselves on the throne. But following Jesus means recognizing that He is in control.

Humility allows us to make other people more important than ourselves.

Gentleness

Gentleness is often misunderstood. It doesn’t mean weakness.

It is power under control.

We can have strength, influence, authority, and confidence while still treating people with gentleness.

Patience

Patience may be one of the hardest things for many of us.

We want things done quickly. We want people to respond quickly. We want circumstances to change quickly.

But God calls us to slow down, bear with one another, and give people room to grow.

And then Colossians continues with something even greater:

Love.

“Beyond all these things, put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity.”

Love brings all of these qualities together.

Don’t Hoard Grace—Ship It

God doesn’t give us compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, and love so that we can keep them to ourselves.

He gives them to us so we can give them away.

The bread and fish were multiplied when they were divided and distributed. In the same way, we can trust God with what we have as we give His grace away.

Maybe the “shipment” God wants you to send today is your time.

Maybe it’s your money.

Maybe it’s your energy.

Maybe it’s your attitude.

Maybe it’s simply listening to someone who needs to be heard.

We don’t have to wait for the perfect opportunity to do ministry.

The people already around us are our ministry.

What If Your Workplace Became a Grace Place?

Imagine if Christians everywhere became known as people who bring grace wherever they go.

Imagine walking into a business and knowing:

This is a grace place.

A place where people are treated with compassion.

A place where people are encouraged.

A place where people are listened to.

A place where people experience humility, gentleness, patience, and love.

That is the vision of marketplace ministry.

We don’t necessarily have to leave our jobs to become ministers. As followers of Jesus, we are already called to live as ministers wherever God has placed us.

Our workplace can become one of the places where God’s grace reaches people.

Measure What You Ship

Here’s a different way to think about our impact.

Instead of measuring only what we receive, let’s measure what we ship.

How much encouragement did I give?

How much kindness did I show?

Did I make someone else’s day a little better?

Did I listen?

Did I demonstrate patience?

Did I put someone else’s needs ahead of my own?

Did my actions help someone move one step closer to Jesus?

That’s ministry.

We don’t have to force conversations or manufacture opportunities. We can simply step into whatever situation God has given us, wearing our uniform of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, and love.

Then we ship as much grace as we can.

God Will Refill the Warehouse

After Jesus fed the five thousand, there were twelve baskets of leftovers.

That is a beautiful picture of God’s abundance.

We don’t have to be afraid that if we give too much grace away, we’ll run out.

God is the source.

His mercies are new every day. When we give away what He has given us, He is able to fill us again.

So let’s stop concentrating on the obstacles and start concentrating on the opportunities.

There are people around us today who need grace.

And God has placed us in their lives for a reason.

Your Mission Today

You don’t need a special platform.

You don’t need a new job.

You don’t need to wait for the perfect conversation.

You simply need to look around and ask:

“Who can I encourage today?”

Then put on your uniform.

Compassion.

Kindness.

Humility.

Gentleness.

Patience.

Love.

And ship some grace.

Because what we do because we follow Jesus matters forever.

Let’s be grace distributors. Let’s make our workplaces grace places. And let’s help the people around us move one step closer to Jesus.
