Build Confidence by Giving Courage Away: Living Out Your Faith in the Marketplace

Every day presents a new opportunity to make an eternal difference—not necessarily by changing careers or doing something extraordinary, but by faithfully representing Christ wherever God has placed us. Whether you’re in an office, on a job site, meeting with clients, or simply interacting with people throughout your day, your workplace is one of the greatest mission fields God has given you.
This month’s focus is simple but powerful: equip and encourage others. At the heart of that calling is today’s key verse:
“Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:11
Encouragement Means Giving Someone Courage
When we think about encouraging others, it’s helpful to remember what encouragement truly means: putting courage into another person.
Every believer has experienced God’s faithfulness. As we reflect on how He has worked in our own lives, we receive courage that we can then pass along to others. Christ has already demonstrated His love by dying on the cross for each of us, giving us every reason to trust Him and confidently encourage those around us.
Your Workplace Is Your Mission Field
Following Jesus doesn’t necessarily mean changing your profession. Most of us continue doing the same work we did before becoming Christ followers. The difference is how we do it.
God calls us to live out our faith in our everyday responsibilities, allowing Jesus to work through us in every interaction. Whether you’re meeting with customers, coworkers, vendors, or strangers, each conversation is an opportunity to reflect Christ’s character.
Sometimes following Christ means making choices that stand out. Living faithfully may look different from the expectations of those around us, but those moments become powerful testimonies of God’s work in our lives.
We Need Community During Difficult Seasons
Life isn’t always easy. Families face hardships. Personal struggles arise. Difficult circumstances can leave us feeling overwhelmed.
That’s why God designed us to encourage one another.
Even when believers are separated by distance, we can pray for each other, support one another, and remind one another of God’s faithfulness. Community allows us to carry each other’s burdens while continuing to glorify Christ together.
Courage Comes from Christ
Jesus promised:
“In the world you will have trouble. But take courage; I have overcome the world.” — John 16:33
The courage we give to others doesn’t come from our own strength. It comes from knowing that Christ has overcome the world.
God doesn’t create the brokenness we experience, but He faithfully works through every circumstance for His glory and our good. That confidence allows us to become encouragers even when life feels difficult.
Be a Difference Maker Today
Every day we interact with family members, coworkers, customers, restaurant employees, store clerks, neighbors, and countless others.
Our assignment is simple:
Pray for people.
Encourage them.
Point them toward Christ.
Let our actions make Jesus visible.
We don’t have to be experts or have all the answers. God simply asks us to be available and faithful.
Say Yes to God’s Assignment
Sometimes we are the one building someone else’s faith.
Other times we are the one being strengthened.
Either way, our responsibility is to remain available to God by saying:
“Here I am, Jesus. Send me.”
God will use our experiences, our personalities, our successes, and even our failures for His purposes. The only question is whether we are paying attention and willing to participate in what He is already doing.
Five Daily Habits That Help Us Live on Mission
Follower of One encourages believers to practice five simple daily habits:
Pray.
Appreciate others.
Know what you believe.
Serve others.
Speak for yourself.
These habits position us to faithfully represent Jesus wherever we are and remind us that our everyday work has eternal significance.
What You Do Today Matters Forever
One of the most encouraging truths is that nothing done in obedience to Christ is wasted.
Every conversation.
Every act of kindness.
Every prayer.
Every opportunity to encourage someone.
God uses them all for His glory.
You don’t have to leave your workplace to serve God. You simply need to follow Jesus while doing the work He has already placed before you. As marketplace ministers, we have the privilege of making Christ visible in our everyday lives, remembering that whatever we do in obedience to Him matters forever.
