Every interaction we have is an opportunity to make a lasting impact. Whether at work, at home, or in our community, God calls us to be intentional about encouraging and equipping others. This month’s focus is centered on a simple but powerful truth: we are called to sharpen one another.
Iron Sharpens Iron
Proverbs 27:17 reminds us:
“Iron sharpens iron, and one person sharpens another.”
Mentorship begins with responsibility. A mentor intentionally brings value into a relationship, while a mentee chooses to receive that value. This isn’t about authority or hierarchy—it’s about two people helping each other grow. Every relationship becomes an opportunity to strengthen someone else’s faith, character, and purpose.
We Become Like Those Around Us
Scripture also teaches in Proverbs 13:20:
“He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.”
The people we spend time with influence our attitudes, decisions, and spiritual growth more than we often realize. That is why it is essential not only to surround ourselves with people who encourage us but also to become the kind of person who encourages others.
Taking Responsibility in Every Relationship
One of the greatest ways we can live out our faith is by choosing to bring something positive into every interaction.
The Five Daily Habits provide a practical framework for doing exactly that:
- Pray for people.
- Appreciate people.
- Know what you believe.
- Serve others.
- Share your own story when opportunities arise.
These habits help us take responsibility for our side of every relationship and allow God to work through us naturally.
Be Salt. Be Light.
Jesus describes His followers as the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Salt preserves and influences. Light brings clarity and hope.
As believers, our purpose is not simply to accomplish tasks or build successful careers. Our purpose is to make Christ visible through the way we live, work, serve, and interact with others. Every conversation is an opportunity to reflect His character.
Living with Purpose Instead of Reacting
It’s easy to become consumed by urgent responsibilities and simply react to whatever happens throughout the day.
Instead, we’re encouraged to begin each day by asking God for direction:
- What assignments has He prepared for today?
- Who needs encouragement?
- Who needs prayer?
- Where can we serve?
Choosing God’s priorities over life’s distractions allows us to fulfill the purpose He has prepared for us.
Your Story Matters
Sharing our faith doesn’t always require preaching. Often, it simply means sharing how Jesus is working in our own lives.
When we focus on telling our story instead of telling others what they should do, we allow the Holy Spirit to work in their hearts. Authentic conversations create opportunities for God to move.
Every Interaction Has Eternal Value
God has placed people in our lives for a reason.
Whether it’s family, coworkers, friends, clients, or complete strangers, every interaction provides an opportunity to glorify Him. Even the smallest act of kindness—a word of encouragement, an expression of gratitude, or a simple act of service—can have eternal significance.
Our purpose is not merely to accomplish today’s tasks but to faithfully represent Christ wherever He has placed us.
A Challenge for Today
Ask yourself:
- Who can I encourage today?
- How can I intentionally add value to someone’s life?
- Am I allowing God to use me in every relationship?
As Marketplace Christians, we have been called to make a positive difference. We belong to Jesus, and the world should see Him through our actions.
Today, choose to pray, appreciate, serve, and encourage someone. You may never know how God will use that simple act to sharpen another person—and to sharpen you as well.
