The Purpose of Follower of One with Mike Henry Sr., Ep #151

By Tammy Burke

I read “My Utmost for His Highest” every year and every year I take notes. So as I read through each passage the next year, I see those notes and think about how far I’ve come. Or, I see where I still struggle with the same problems.

When we started Follower of One six years ago, I was still working full-time. But I wanted to realize a way that my faith could take up more of my life. I was frustrated because I’d look at these notes and realize I still struggled with many of the same problems.

It’s one of the reasons why I created Follower of One. Listen to this episode to learn more about building a community of like-minded people and the goal of this community.

Outline of the Episode

  • The purpose of Follower of One [1:05]
  • Why Follower of One focuses on faith at work [3:24]
  • Building a community of like-minded people [6:15]
  • The goal of the Follower of One community [10:36]

Why Follower of One focuses on faith at work

The world has become more complex than the church has been prepared to deal with. It feels like our jobs have simply become staying out of trouble until we make it to church the next week.

As trains and railroads connected the world and we thought more industrially, work became something we did away from home. Church started saying “Stay out of trouble while you’re away and when you get back we’ll help you with your faith.” Faith became something we did while we weren’t at work.

That’s why Follower of One focuses on faith at work. Technology has allowed work to consume more of our lives than ever before. We can’t live in a sacred and secular divide where we don’t mix our work and faith. Our spiritual life is what will last forever. I want to invest in my eternal life. I need a community of people to help me do that.

Building a community of like-minded people

Many of us have all of Jesus we can stand. We know we can pray more, give more, and serve more to experience more of our faith. But we’ve reached a tolerance point where our life is “good.” To take it up a notch means changing our behavior.

I wanted to be around people who wanted to take things up a notch. I want my life to look like a graph. I want to have my relationship with Jesus move in an upward trajectory. I want a community of people who help me do that. And I want to help others do the same.

We act like the people we surround ourselves with. The people who have the most access to our lives influence us the most. I strive to be intentional with the people that I interact with every single day. These are the people I allow to influence the direction of my life. That’s why I created the Follower of One community.

The purpose of the Follower of One Community

The purpose of Follower of One is to create a community of people who help one another improve in their faith. Our goal is to talk about our faith outside of the church—in practical everyday life—365 days a year. We also want to be a resource for churches. The church is designed to be a place to sharpen and encourage each other and grow.

Our job is to bear the image of Jesus. I want others to see Jesus in the way I live. My overarching purpose is to help other people move one notch closer to Jesus. I can live this purpose in every interaction I have. Every day is an opportunity for us to bear Christ’s image and move one step closer to him.

Are you ready to be more intentional with your faith? I want to invite you to join our community. Go to Follower of One, click on the “community” button, and join our online community. Invest some time every week to get more engaged. Join us on a marketplace mission trip (a two-week exercise).
