Know What You Believe: Sure-Footed Faith

By Tacoi Bell

The world and its contradictions to the Word of God can be loud. The systems of the world are often trying to convince us to believe in something other than Jesus and what the work of the cross accomplished.

It is because of this that we must be sure of our faith in Jesus. If we don’t have our own personal beliefs, the world will surely try to give us something to believe in. And it may lead us into a lifestyle that doesn’t glorify God.

Sure-Footed Faith

To have sure-footed faith, we have to be sure that we know who Jesus is, how he lived, and why he died. It is a resolute, unyielding belief that God gave his son Jesus for us, and that Jesus is now returned to the Father’s right hand and intercedes for us (Romans 8:34). For the believer, our faith should be showcased front and center in how we interact and serve others, in what we allow ourselves to be a part of, and how we want others to perceive our walk with God. If we believe that Jesus gave his life so that he could take back power from the enemy, we must also believe that this same power lies within us.

Where Does Sure-Footed Faith Come From?

The beautiful thing about this relationship with Jesus is that God constantly wants to show us we are his children. We never have to second-guess him or his thoughts about us, as Jeremiah 29:11 tells us. He just wants us to be secure in him and what he says he will do on our behalf. So how do we become more assured in God?

Two women sit on the ledge of an office window and are talking.

Written Word

Developing assurity in who God is and what he has done for us comes from reading the Word of God. That’s right: the Bible is the continual well of faith from which Christ-followers drink. In the Bible, we find information about the life of Jesus and the first apostles. It is also where we uncover the nature of God, his everlasting love for us, and the mysteries he wants his children to uncover. That is God’s unchanging logos.

Spoken Word

God doesn’t just speak to us through his written Word, but he literally speaks to us. Sermons preached by our pastors on Sunday as well as the Holy Spirit can reveal rhema word that we can meditate on day and night.

God in the Everyday

It’s always a joy to receive those beautiful reminders that God is with us. Perhaps you’ve been dealing with a difficult situation at work that has now turned in your favor. Your cousin has been healed from cancer. You’ve seen many coworkers give their lives to God based on how they’ve seen you conduct yourself as a Christian. Everyday, God provides us with subtle hints that he is concerned with the matters that concern us.

Several years ago, we were new implants in another city in another state. I would frequent on-the-go coffee shops where I’d order a coffee and a few donuts. I’d sometimes order just one or two donuts, but upon opening the bag, would realize I had three or four. I have to believe it was due to my disposition as I interacted with the service staff, but it was simply the god in me being reflected for everyone to see. I loved the simple yet effective reminders that this walk I was and am still on has not been in vain.

Experiencing God through his written Word, spoken word, and in our everyday lives gives us circumstances that we can always look back to when we face another of life’s challenges. So when we are asked, “Why do you trust God so much?”, our answer is prepared as 1 Peter 3:15 tells us it should be:
but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, (ESV)
