Devotional: Pressing Toward the Mark at Work

By Heather Shaffer

📖 “I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 3:14

 Reflection:

Every step forward requires leaving something behind — even in the workplace. The Apostle Paul reminds us that pressing toward the mark means refusing to be anchored by what was — whether past mistakes, missed promotions, or difficult work relationships. We cannot fully embrace God’s purpose for our careers if our hands are still holding the weight of yesterday.

Each prayer, each act of integrity and excellence at work, is a declaration that we trust God’s direction more than our past circumstances. Celebrating testimonies of His faithfulness reminds us: it was His grace that carried us, His strength that sustained us, and His love that never let us go — even in our professional challenges.

Your past at work is a testimony — not a tether. Let gratitude and faith propel you forward into the “high calling” God has for your career.

Call to Action:

This week, take time to thank God for His faithfulness in your workplace journey. Ask Him to show you what to release — past disappointments, regrets, or fears — so you can step boldly into your next assignment or opportunity with purpose and joy.

Closing Prayer:

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for calling me higher — even in my work. Help me to press forward with faith, leaving behind the things that no longer serve Your purpose in my life. Teach me to see my job as a place where Your glory can shine through me. Renew my strength, refresh my heart, and remind me that my work is worship when it’s done unto You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
