Friendship with the World – James 4:4

By Tammy Burke

What does it mean to be a friend of the world?

James doesn’t pull punches. In this passage he challenges believers to examine themselves. Wherever we’re a friend of the world, we’re enemies of God. You’ve heard a number of sayings that there are only 2 types of people in the world. Here, in scripture, James is telling us we’re either enemies of God or friends of God. There’s no place else to stand.

So what does it mean to be a friend of the world? Where, where do we find our joy? What consumes our energy? If you look at our calendar or our checkbook, can we say that we do the things we do because we want to obey God, or because we want to do what we want? Often friendship with the world is just chasing what we want.

But do we have to join a monastery? How can we do this without living a boring life? I say we ask God. I’m not going to give you a list. But if you’re willing to do what God wants, he will figure out how to get you on his program.
