Let Your Story Shine: Let Your Actions Speak

By Nicole Cevallos

“Your light must shine before people in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” — Matthew 5:16 (NASB)

We often think about sharing our faith as something we do with our words. We tell people what we believe, explain why we follow Jesus, and share our testimony.

But our story is not always told with words.

Every day, our choices, our behavior, and the way we treat the people around us are telling a story. Our actions can reveal what we truly believe—even when our lips are not moving.

Your Life Tells a Story

In 1 Peter 2:15–16, we are reminded:

“For such is the will of God that by doing right, you may silence the ignorance of foolish men. Act as free men and do not use your freedom as a covering for evil, but use it as bondslaves of God.”

Peter connects our faith with the way we live. Following Jesus changes the way we respond to situations, especially when doing the right thing is difficult or costly.

There will be moments when taking the easy road is tempting. We may have an opportunity to cut corners, avoid an uncomfortable situation, or choose what benefits us rather than what is best for someone else.

But following Jesus means freely choosing His way.

We can choose to do what is right in His eyes, even when there are unpleasant consequences. We can choose to serve, give, listen, forgive, encourage, and help others because we trust that God is at work.

Those choices tell a story.

Our Actions Can Make People Curious

When we consistently live differently, people may begin to wonder why.

We don’t have to constantly explain what kind of people we are. We can simply live in a way that causes others to become curious.

Our actions can communicate that something is different about us.

Maybe it happens when you take the time to help someone even though you’re busy. Maybe you choose honesty when dishonesty would be easier. Maybe you serve someone when there is nothing in it for you. Maybe you respond with patience when frustration would be easier.

These ordinary choices can point people toward Jesus.

The goal isn’t to make ourselves look good. The goal is for our lives to bring glory to God.

As 1 Peter 2:12 reminds us, our behavior among others can lead them to recognize God through our good deeds.

Freedom Means Choosing Christ

Following Jesus gives us freedom, but that freedom is not meant to become an excuse for doing whatever we want.

We are free to choose what Christ wants.

That may mean choosing the harder path. It may mean giving up our time, our money, our comfort, or our convenience for the sake of someone else.

It may even mean doing what is right when we know there could be a cost.

But there is joy in following Jesus.

We don’t have to control every outcome. We can trust God with the results and focus on faithfully doing what He has asked us to do.

As followers of Christ, we want to be ready to say, “Here I am, send me.”

That means being available for whatever God puts in front of us.

Your Marketplace Is Part of Your Story

For Follower of One, this is at the heart of being a marketplace minister.

Your workplace is not separate from your faith.

The people you work with, the customers you serve, the meetings you attend, the conversations you have, and the decisions you make are all opportunities to follow Jesus.

Your faith becomes visible through the way you live.

When you intentionally submit yourself to God and choose to do what He would have you do, your everyday actions become part of His work.

You don’t need a platform. You don’t need a perfect opportunity. You simply need to be available and willing to follow Jesus in the situation right in front of you.

What Story Are Your Actions Telling?

Our actions speak, whether we realize it or not.

The question is: What are they saying?

Are they pointing people toward Christ?

Are they showing patience, generosity, honesty, humility, and love?

Are we willing to do what is right even when it costs us something?

Sometimes our actions may be the first thing that makes someone curious about Jesus. And when someone eventually asks why we live the way we do, we have an opportunity to tell them about Him.

That is part of the beauty of living on mission.

We live differently because we follow One.

Put Your Faith Into Action Today

You don’t have to wait for a big opportunity.

Start with the people already around you.

Pray for the people you will interact with today. Think about your next meeting. Consider the coworker who may need encouragement. Look for someone you can serve. Ask Jesus what He wants you to do, and then be willing to do it.

Maybe following Jesus today will require you to take the harder road.

Take it.

Maybe He will ask you to give your time when you’d rather keep it for yourself.

Give it.

Maybe He will put someone in front of you who simply needs to be seen, heard, or helped.

Stop and serve them.

Your actions matter.

As followers of Jesus, what we do because we follow Him matters forever. Even something as simple as giving a cup of cold water in His name matters to God.

So let your story shine.

Not just through what you say, but through the way you live.

Follow Jesus today. Let your actions speak. And watch how He works through your everyday life.
