How meaningful relationships, spiritual growth, and a shared purpose help us live out our faith at work.
The people we surround ourselves with influence who we become. They can encourage us to grow, challenge us to think differently, and inspire us to live out our faith more intentionally. At the same time, the purpose we pursue shapes our priorities, our decisions, and the way we interact with others.
In a recent Follower of One livestream, Mike Henry shared two important biblical principles: our relationships matter, and a higher purpose elevates the way we live. Together, these truths remind us that following Jesus is not meant to be a private experience. Our faith is meant to influence our relationships, our workplaces, and the people we encounter every day.
Iron Sharpens Iron: Why Community Matters
Proverbs 27:17 says:
“Iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”
This familiar verse reminds us that relationships play an important role in our spiritual growth. Just as iron sharpens iron, the people around us can challenge us to become better, strengthen our character, and encourage us to keep growing in our faith.
The opposite is also true. First Corinthians 15:33 warns that bad company corrupts good character. Our relationships can influence us positively or negatively, shaping our attitudes, decisions, and behavior over time.
That is why it is important to surround ourselves with people who encourage us to follow Jesus and live out our faith consistently.
Mike explained that this principle is one of the reasons behind Follower of One. The goal is to bring believers together, helping them encourage one another and become more intentional about their ministry in everyday life. Follower of One does not seek to replace the local church but to support and equip believers for the ministry God has given them.
We need people who challenge us to grow, encourage us to keep going, and remind us that our faith matters in every area of life.
Sometimes, sharpening one another requires honest conversations. Speaking the truth in love can be uncomfortable, but loving accountability helps us remain faithful to Christ. When approached with humility, wisdom, and love, these conversations can strengthen relationships and help us grow spiritually.
Consider the people you spend the most time with. Do they encourage you to become more like Jesus? Are you also helping others grow through your words, actions, prayers, and example?
We are not only called to benefit from community. We are also called to contribute to it.
Unite in Purpose
Philippians 2:2 provides another important principle:
“Make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose.”
A shared purpose helps people work together, support one another, and move toward a common goal. But for followers of Jesus, that purpose must be bigger than personal success, comfort, or recognition.
Mike explained that the higher our purpose, the more we can see beyond our immediate desires and consider the bigger picture of what God is doing.
When our focus is limited to what we want, our decisions can become centered on ourselves. But when we pursue the purpose of glorifying God and serving others, our priorities begin to change.
We become more willing to listen, cooperate, and encourage people whose gifts and callings may differ from our own.
Unity Does Not Mean We All Have to Do the Same Thing
God has created each of us with different experiences, abilities, interests, and opportunities. We may serve Him in different ways, work in different industries, and have different responsibilities.
Unity does not require everyone to follow the same path. Instead, it means keeping Jesus at the center of what we do.
In John 21, when Peter asks Jesus about another disciple, Jesus directs Peter back to his own responsibility: following Him. The lesson is simple: we should focus on following Jesus faithfully rather than comparing our calling with someone else’s.
We do not need to criticize others because their ministry looks different from ours. We can trust God to work through people in different circumstances while remaining faithful to the work He has placed before us.
Our callings may be different, but our purpose is united in Christ.
This perspective helps us approach our work with humility. Instead of competing for recognition or insisting that everyone do things our way, we can focus on serving God faithfully and helping others flourish.
Pray Specifically and Take Action
Another important lesson from Mike’s message is the importance of moving beyond uncertainty and taking action.
Prayer is essential to our relationship with God. It helps us seek His wisdom, align our hearts with His will, and recognize opportunities to serve. But prayer should also lead us toward faithful action.
Mike shared how he had begun praying more specifically about Follower of One, including its ministry, finances, and use of time. Rather than remaining vague about what he was asking God to do, he wanted to be more intentional in seeking direction.
This is a valuable reminder for our everyday lives.
We can ask God to help us recognize a specific opportunity to encourage a coworker, serve someone in need, resolve a conflict, or demonstrate patience in a difficult situation. Then, instead of waiting indefinitely for perfect circumstances, we can take a thoughtful step forward.
We may not know how everything will turn out. We may even make mistakes along the way. But we can learn, adjust, and continue moving forward with faith and humility.
Living out our faith at work often begins with small, practical decisions: listening when someone needs to talk, offering help without expecting anything in return, praying for a colleague, or choosing integrity when no one is watching.
We do not have to see the entire picture to be faithful with the opportunities in front of us.
Focus on What Matters Forever
Our everyday responsibilities can easily consume our attention. We think about our schedules, finances, goals, deadlines, and the challenges we need to solve.
These things matter, but they are not the whole picture.
Mike reminded us to consider the eternal significance of how we live. The time we spend serving others, encouraging someone who is struggling, and demonstrating the character of Jesus can have an impact beyond what we can immediately see.
Second Corinthians 4:18 encourages believers to focus not only on what is temporary and visible but also on what is eternal and unseen.
When we remember that our lives have an eternal purpose, our everyday work takes on a different meaning. A conversation with a coworker becomes an opportunity to show compassion. A difficult relationship becomes an opportunity to practice patience and forgiveness. An ordinary workday becomes another opportunity to represent Jesus through our actions.
We may never know the full impact of a small act of faithfulness. But we can trust God to work through the things we do because we follow Jesus.
As Mike often reminds the Follower of One community:
What we do because we follow Jesus matters forever.
Become the Iron That Sharpens Others
Building a community on purpose is not simply about finding the right people to influence us or discovering a bigger purpose for ourselves. It is also about becoming someone who helps others grow.
Hebrews 10:24 says:
“And let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds.”
We can put this principle into practice wherever God has placed us. We do not need a ministry title or a formal leadership position to make a difference.
We can encourage a teammate who feels discouraged, recognize the contributions of a colleague, offer constructive feedback with kindness, or create space for someone to share what they are going through.
We can also seek relationships with other believers who will encourage us to remain faithful when following Jesus becomes difficult.
As we grow together, we become better equipped to serve the people around us. Our workplaces become places where we can demonstrate Christ’s love, build meaningful relationships, and make a positive difference in the lives of others.
The challenge is to be intentional about both sides of this relationship: allowing others to sharpen us and being willing to sharpen others through love, encouragement, truth, and example.
A purposeful community does more than bring people together. It encourages each person to grow, serve, and pursue a shared purpose centered on Jesus.
Put It Into Practice This Week
Here are three practical ways to apply these principles in your everyday life.
1. Connect with someone who encourages your faith.
Reach out to a fellow believer who challenges you to grow spiritually. Share what God is teaching you, pray together, or encourage one another to live out your faith at work.
2. Identify one opportunity to serve someone.
Look beyond your own responsibilities and consider who might need your help, encouragement, or attention. Take one practical step to serve that person without expecting anything in return.
3. Ask God for direction and take action.
Pray specifically about how you can represent Jesus in your workplace this week. Then look for an opportunity to put that prayer into practice.
You do not need to have everything figured out. Start with the next faithful step.
Unite in Purpose and Live Your Faith at Work
Philippians 2:2 reminds us of the importance of being united in spirit and committed to one purpose. The people around us matter because we influence one another. Our purpose matters because it shapes how we live, work, and serve.
When we surround ourselves with people who encourage us to follow Jesus and commit ourselves to a purpose greater than our own interests, we become better equipped to live out our faith in everyday life.
God has given each of us different gifts, responsibilities, and opportunities. We do not have to compare our journey with anyone else’s. We can focus on following Jesus, serving the people He places in our lives, and trusting Him with the bigger picture.
A purposeful community begins when we choose to grow together, encourage one another, and put our faith into action. Whether we are at work, at home, or connecting with other believers, we have opportunities to reflect Jesus through the way we treat people and the choices we make.
As you go through this week, ask yourself:
- Who is helping sharpen my faith?
- Who can I encourage or help grow?
- What specific action can I take today to demonstrate the love of Jesus?
- Am I pursuing my own interests, or am I seeking to honor God through the way I live and work?
You have an opportunity to make a difference right where you are.
Let’s unite in purpose, encourage one another, and live our faith at work so others can see Jesus through us. What we do because we follow Jesus matters forever.
